About Us
Future Problem Solving West Virginia
Each year, West Virginia students compete in a variety of academic challenges designed to empower curious youth to become changemakers. Our K-12 educational programs help young people gain skills they need to succeed in work and life.
Grades K-12
Students compete in three divisions: junior (grades 4 to 6), middle (grades 7 to 9), and senior (grades 10 to 12). There is also a non-competitive program for grades K to 9.
Team and Individual Options
Problem solvers may work on challenges and projects in teams or on an individual basis.
5 Annual Topics
Each school year, students get 3-5 opportunities, based on their progress locally and in the WV State Finals, to solve important global challenges.
5Cs of Learning
Our interdisciplinary problem-solving process infuses important 21st Century Learning skills throughout all our programs and aligns with a wide variety of education standards.

International Conference
West Virginia at the World Finals
Each year our West Virginia State Bowl winners are invited to compete alongside their peers from around the world at the Future Problem Solving’s International Conference.
2026-2027 Competition Season
Our real world issues engage and inspire students
Our topics represent important challenges from business, civics, society, science, and technology and serve as the thematic basis for given problem-solving situations. Each school year, students get multiple opportunities to solve important near-future global issues as they progress in local and regional competitions. Students may also choose to address a current local community issue with our Community Projects program.

West Virginia registration opens in August
Every team or individual competitor needs an adult to serve as their coach and primary contact for registration and communications with Future Problem Solving. The registration fees cover all instructional materials for student success as well as evaluation and feedback on their submissions. Visit our FAQs for more information about how registration works.
